Christmas Star Butter Cookies

Buttery, not too sweet, melt-in-the-mouth cookies. Delicious!!

These cookies make such great gifts to friends, family and colleagues. Store them in clear small containers and distribute to family and friends.

Makes about 75 small cookies

  • 250g salted butter (I used golden churn chilled )
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • 350 plain flour, sifted (I used Sunshine)
  • 3 tbsp fine sugar

  1. Melt butter over low heat for 4 minutes. Stir and set aside to cool. Add essence and mix.
  2. Mix flour and sugar and add to melted butter.
  3. Preheat oven at 180°C/350°F for 10 minutes.
  4. Line a baking tray with baking paper.
  5. Roll dough till 5mm thick. Use star-shaped cookie cutter to cut out dough. Lift the cut-out dough with a scraper or knife. Place on baking tray.
  6. Bake for 16 minutes. Bake for a few more minutes if you prefer a crunchier and browner cookie

Secrets to a great butter cookie:
  1. Use good quality butter that contains at least 80% milk fat.
  2. Do not overhandle the dough – or the cookies will end up with a ‘tough’ texture.
  3. Keep the dough covered to prevent it from drying.
  4. If you prefer crunchier cookies, bake them longer.
